Updated 4:42 a.m. ET: LONDON --?Britain's Supreme Court on Wednesday backed the extradition of WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange to Sweden where he is accused of sex crimes -- the latest chapter in the saga of the self-styled Internet whistle-blower.?

Swedish prosecutors want to question Assange over claims of rape and sexual assault made by two female former WikiLeaks volunteers, and he has been fighting a lengthy legal battle against extradition since his arrest in Britain in Dec. 2010.

Seven judges at Britain's highest court rejected by a majority of 5-2 that Assange's claim that a European Arrest Warrant (EAW) under which his extradition is sought was invalid. ?Two lower courts have already ruled he should be extradited.

The former computer hacker gained international prominence in 2010 when WikiLeaks began releasing secret video footage and thousands of U.S. diplomatic cables about Iraq and Afghanistan, in the largest leak of classified documents in U.S. history.

That made him a hero to anti-censorship campaigners but a menace to Washington and other governments. Assange also faced widespread criticism that he had put lives at risk by blowing the cover of sources who spoke to diplomats and intelligence agents in countries where it was dangerous to do so.

Since then, WikiLeaks has faded from the headlines due to a dearth of scoops and a blockade by credit card companies that has made donations to the site almost impossible. Assange's personal standing has been damaged by the Swedish sex case and he has lost support from most of his celebrity backers.

Since his detention, he has mostly been living under strict bail conditions at the country mansion of a wealthy supporter in eastern England. His associates say that amounts to 540 days under house arrest without charge.

After losing his appeal against extradition to Sweden to face allegations against rape and sexual assault, The Wikileaks founder Julian Assange, says he is considering his next step, which could be an appeal to Britain's Supreme Court. ITN's Sejal Karia reports.

The flamboyant Australian's appeal hinged on a legal technicality rather than the substance of the allegations of sexual misconduct or his claims that the United States has been putting pressure on Britain and Sweden to take action against him.

His lawyers argued the EAW was invalid because it was issued by a prosecutor and not a judge or a court as required in Britain. Prosecutors acting for Sweden say different countries have different legal procedures which are allowable under the agreed EAW format.?

Another appeal still possible

Assage can still take his case further, to the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR).?

If that court agrees to hear his challenge, a decision which must be made within 14 days, he can lodge an injunction to have the extradition process put on hold, and it could be months at the very least before any conclusive verdict.

"If the ECHR declines to take the case then he will be extradited to Sweden as soon as arrangements can be made," Britain's Crown Prosecution Service said.

Should he win the case, a spokeswoman for Sweden's prosecutors said the EAW would still be valid in any other European country.

Assange's personal travails have accelerated WikiLeaks' slide toward irrelevance since its heyday.

The suspected source of the site's biggest and most dramatic 2010 leaks, U.S. intelligence analyst Bradley Manning, is now facing 22 criminal charges which, if he is convicted, could land him in jail for life.

Manning's predicament has not encouraged any new sources to come forward, and to compound WikiLeaks' problems the blockade by the likes of U.S. credit card firms Visa and MasterCard has starved it of cash.

Defense lawyers for Bradley Manning, the Army private accused of spilling classified secrets to WikiLeaks, say his sexual orientation plays a role in the case against him. NBC's Jim Miklaszewski reports.

Assange once enjoyed support from socialite Jemima Khan, film director Ken Loach and crusading journalist John Pilger, but most of his high-profile backers have since distanced themselves from him. Many former friends and associates have turned against Assange also, describing him as a megalomaniac.?

However, he still has loyal followers and rallies are planned in several countries in the wake of the court's verdict.?

Instantly recognisable with his unusual white-blond hair, Assange has appeared in an episode of "The Simpsons". He has also launched a talk show on Russia Today, a Kremlin-funded English language TV station.

Remembering the Sullivan Family

On Memorial Day, it seems only fitting to remember the family most famous for its personal loss during a war. This family happens to be from my hometown.

As a native of Waterloo, Iowa, I grew up hearing the name of the ?Five Sullivan Brothers? just because we had a convention center named in their honor. It wasn?t until years later I realized why. Perhaps you already know the story?these five brothers enlisted in the Navy after the attack on Pearl Harbor with just one condition. They wanted to be able to serve together.

They were granted their request, and served together until they all died together, as well, when the U.S.S. Juneau was torpedoed by the Japanese and sunk in November 1942. Suddenly the Sullivan family of Waterloo, Iowa, was given the unwelcome distinction of bearing the largest single loss for a military family in history, a distinction they retain to this day.

In 2008, Waterloo opened the Sullivan Brothers Iowa Veterans Museum in their honor, just one portion of which lets visitors walk through a replica of the Sullivan home and flip through a scrapbook of their family photos and newspaper articles. It?s an intimate family atmosphere with a crackling radio program in the background. So even though my co-author, Karen Whiting, was writing the World War 2 stories for our book, she let me write this one contribution from my own hometown: Carrying On. Loyalty cards are equally easy to use: select one of them in the app and its barcode is written to the E Ink display on the Geode's rear surface.

Of course iCache has considered the security implications and has addressed them a few different ways. The iPhone doesn't store any of your card details as they're kept in the housing itself, on launch the app does a hardware check to be sure nothing's been tampered with, asks for a fingerprint scan, and the card programming only lasts for a user-defined period of time after you've tapped it on the table. Europe at the crossroads: splinter or unite

BRUSSELS (AP) ? The European Union, a hope for peace that rose from the fires of World War II, paused Wednesday to honor its past and ponder its future ? and how it can ensure it still has one in light of the anti-austerity anger expressed this week by voters in France and Greece.

May 9 is Europe Day, a commemoration of a key events that led to the creation of the modern EU. It was on this day in 1950 that French Foreign Minister Robert Schuman issued a declaration calling for an integrated Europe.

Tens of millions of Europeans had perished in twin cataclysms of World Wars I and II. At root, Schuman's dream was simple: He wanted an economic union, a sharing of strategic resources in Europe that would "make war not only unthinkable but materially impossible."

By that measure the project has been a resounding success. The EU has grown to 27 members and the economic union has grown ever deeper, including a common market and, for 17 countries, a shared currency. The interlocking interests have helped to shield the bloc from any possibility of war.

But on Sunday voters in France and Greece voted in droves against the strategy of harsh budget cuts leaders contend is necessary to preserve the economic union that is at the heart of the European Union.

The question then arises: Is the European dream in danger? Could it all come unstuck?

"The current situation is extremely fragile and extremely dangerous," said Zsolt Darvas, a research fellow at Bruegel, a Brussels-based economic think tank.

Greece's two major parties, both of which backed a drastic package of budget cuts in order to secure a desperately needed bailout loan, were so thumped by voters that even put together they would not command a majority in Parliament.

That's alarming because it raises the prospect of protracted political paralysis, in which market panic could trigger a Greek financial meltdown and possibly force the country out of the currency union. That would endanger the viability of the entire European project.

And what of the Franco-German cooperation that was key to the EU during its inception, and more recently instrumental in charting Europe's course through its crisis?

French voters ousted Nicolas Sarkozy as president on Sunday and replaced him with the Socialist Francois Hollande, a leader not at all committed to swallowing more doses of the EU's bitter austerity.

That raises questions about the continent's key alliance, since German Chancellor Angela Merkel is the staunchest champion of Europe's strategy of belt-tightening.

However, some see the unraveling of the Merkel-Sarkozy pairing as possibly a good thing.

The two were so close they were collectively dubbed "Merkozy." They met before each EU summit to make decisions that, critics say, the other EU heads of government were simply expected to endorse.

Europeans increasingly saw a democracy deficit in which the top players were bullying weaker members into submission.

"That was not the right thing to do for Europe," said Paul De Grauwe, an economist with the London School of Economics. "This is the reason the union might break up."

Or one of the reasons.

The other is the potential catastrophe of Greece breaking away from the euro.

If that were to happen, virtually every Greek with euros in the bank would rush to withdraw them and deposit them abroad, said Darvas of Bruegel. The country's financial system would collapse within days, and the country would suffer a terrible financial crisis ? far worse than the one it now endures.

Beyond that, analysts say that Greece's exit from the euro would leave investors wondering which country would be next, raising the prospect of a financial contagion worse than any that has been seen in the course of the crisis.

"The European project will be in danger," Darvas said.

The irony is that Greek voters are not rejecting the European Union, just an EU strategy of unrelenting budget cuts that has pushed struggling economies deeper into the hole.

Antonis Samaras, the leader of Greece's Conservative New Democracy party, has called for the terms of the country's bailout loans to be re-negotiated to put more emphasis on stimulating growth.

Some experts say that slowing down the push for budget balancing ? though not abandoning it ? while stimulating the economy could form the basis of a more successful EU approach to the crisis.

But there are more radical voices on the rise. Alexis Tsipras, the left-wing politician now trying to form a government in Greece, wants to pull out of the agreement under which the country is receiving bailout funds.

Samaras said that would bring catastrophe.

"The Greek people have not given a mandate to destroy the country, nor to leave the euro," Samaras said. "Quite the opposite. And those who understood something like that are altering and misinterpreting the electoral result."

As the political wrangling in Greece continues, the question of whether the union will hold together, whether Robert Schuman's dream will survive, hangs in the balance.

EU leaders, while they have been accused of often being a half-step late in their responses to the series of crises, have nevertheless shown strong and durable political will in their efforts to save the European project.

They have faced down other crises that felt more immediately threatening, such as in December, when it was unknown whether Greece would fulfill the conditions to receive a ?130 billion rescue package.

But De Grauwe says Europe is today entering more treacherous terrain.

"This is in away deeper, because it's more political," he said. "It's testing the political viability of the project."

HTC One X kernel source code released

We're already starting to see a a fairly large selection of custom ROMs for HTC's new hero device, the One X. And development work is sure to be accelerated with the release of the kernel source for the Tegra 3- powered international variant, as is required under the open source rules. The code, which weighs around 111MB, is available for software version 1.26 and 1.28 on a variety of unlocked and branded versions of the One X.

We've yet to see kernel source appearing for the other three HTC One phones -- the One S, One V and One XL (aka AT&T One X) -- but with the appearance of code for the One X today, we'd expect it to land sooner rather than later.
