Good Phishing Techniques Continue to Penetrate in Corporate ...

Think your company?s employees are savvy enough not to fall for phishing attacks? Well, think again. According to FireEye?s Advanced Threat Report, email-based attacks increased 56 percent in the first six months of 2012. Email-based advanced cyber attacks easily bypassed traditional signature-based security defenses, preying on naive users to install malicious files. Ashar Aziz, founder and CEO of FireEye, said in a release

Cybercriminals continue to evolve and refine their attack tactics to evade detection and use techniques that work. Spearphishing emails are on the rise because they work. Signature-based detection is ineffective against these constantly changing advanced attacks, so IT security departments need to add a layer of advanced threat protection to their security defenses.

FireEye may have come up with that additional layer. The company came up with a list of the top words used in successful spear-phishing attacks geared toward corporate networks. The report is not surprisingly titled ?Top Words Used in Spear Phishing Attacks to Successfully Compromise Enterprise Networks and Steal Data? and identifies the social engineering techniques cybercriminals use in email-based advanced cyber attacks. According to the report, the top words cybercriminals use create a sense of urgency, to trick unsuspecting recipients into downloading malicious files. The top word category used to evade traditional IT security defenses in email-based attacks relates to express shipping. The report pointed out that express shipping terms are included in about one quarter of attacks, including ?DHL,? ?UPS? and ?delivery.? Urgent terms such as ?notification? and ?alert? are included in about 10 percent of attacks. An example of a malicious attachment is ?UPS-Delivery-Confirmation-Alert_April-2012.zip.?

Finance, travel and billing words are popular, too.

What a great idea to pull this together. Anyone who has gotten ? and actually looked at ? enough spam can figure out a bit of a pattern to phishing attacks. For instance, I?ll get an unusually high number of emails alerting me to problems in a package delivery in one month and the next month, I?ll get a ton of emails telling me that friends and family are sending me e-cards. (Right now, I?m getting a slew of LinkedIn alerts, all of which have some kind of code words or phrases.)

Having a solid working list of code words helps security folks set up filters to send these phishing messages directly to spam. The words in the report can also be easily shared with employees who now have something to check against if they are unsure of the validity of an email.

I?m kind of surprised that I haven?t seen anything like this sooner. It is so simplistic an idea, yet so valuable in providing an extra layer of protection to the network.

Gearing Your Small Business for Innovation | Innovation Management

As an entrepreneur, constant innovation is critical for the long-term sustainability and success of your business. But innovating doesn?t require you to be the next Steve Jobs or to create something the world has never seen before. In the context of a small business, it rather involves responding to your market?s needs quickly and accurately ? and ensuring that you put appropriate systems and processes in place. This will ensure that innovation becomes an extension of your business? thinking and operations.

While innovation is often thought of as something involving cutting-edge technology, in the context of SMEs it should rather be defined as a small business? ability to adapt to changes in its environment ? with the process catalyzing new ideas, products and service offerings, and potentially different ways of doing business.

As such, innovation can enable your SME to exploit changes and opportunities in order to stay relevant and gain market share. This is especially possible given the speed with which you as an entrepreneur can effect change in your business.

SciArt of the Day: Blood of a Hero

Daredevil #18 ? Marvel Comics, Art by Paolo Rivera.

?

Artist Paolo Rivera captures the blood of superhero Daredevil, the blind vigilante with superhuman senses, in much the way his radar-sense must detect the pulsing network within his own body. Yeah, yeah- the horns are his costume, and so wouldn?t have blood?vessels. That?s the type of artistic licence that makes a science-art image more iconic, not less.

Science and medical illustration can be more than functional ? they can inspire and help us re-think fiction, something comic book artists like Rivera can employ with ?jaw-dropping effect.

Mindset ? Becoming a Full Time Real Estate Investor | Real Estate ...

Several books and late night shows state that anyone and everyone should quit their jobs and get into real estate full-time. Being a full-time investor is not for everyone: a lot of people do very well by neing an investor part-time, while others see it as a full time opportunity. Let?s point out the pros and cons of full-time versus part-time investing. (Please wait a few moments for video upload)

Full-Time Investors acquire a deep knowledge of?real estate: they must be?continuosly up to date with the ever changing real estate market. Reading, attending seminars and keeping informed are necessary. since they are more focused on the business of investing in real estate, they develop a system that will free up more time for expanding the business in different directions or spend time with family.

It takes a strong discipline and commitment to become a Full-Time Investor, but once the investor sets up a system and gets adjusted with being self-employed, the rewards are well worth the efforts.

The Part-Time Investor holds a ?regular job.? This could be by choice or until the real estate venture takes off. The general rule is if the?investor starts making more money by working part-time in real estate that at the full-time job, it is time to consider becoming a full time investor. At that point a full time job is costing the investor money!

The advantage of having a fixed income will certainly help finance the first real estate deals until the investor becomes a pro at it (lenders like to see that the borrower has a fixed income) and it relieves a lot of the stress on counting on real estate as the main source of income for living expenses.

Part-time investors have to acquire the same knowledge as a full-time investor. It takes a lot of discipline and sacrifice of personal time. They basically have to work twice as hard as a full-time investor and it will take longer to achieve their goals.

Real estate is a business that requires dedication and focus, but in the long run is well worth the effort, since it can provide whatever income you set your goal to, retirement security and more free time for a personal life than a full-time job would ever offer.

PITTSBURGH (AP) ? Pittsburgh police said they had serious concerns when an armed man took a business owner hostage in a downtown high-rise office building ? and not just because he had a knife.

The suspect, 22-year-old Klein Michael Thaxton, made Facebook posts during the five-hour ordeal Friday, authorities said, and they feared that responses from friends, family and others might goad him into violence.

In the end, police say, Thaxton surrendered peacefully and released businessman Charles Breitsman.

Now police believe that Thaxton might have chosen Breitsman because he spotted a smartphone and computer in his office and saw a high-profile opportunity to express himself on the social networking site, Chief Nathan Harper said.

Thaxton was arraigned early Saturday on felony charges of kidnapping, aggravated assault and making terroristic threats. He remains jailed on $1 million bail.

Harper said authorities might never know the reason Thaxton decided to take a hostage.

"We will leave that to the mental professionals to figure that out and get the man some help," Harper said. Thaxton will automatically receive a mental health review because of the charges.

Thaxton told police he left a halfway house about 3 a.m. Friday carrying a kitchen knife, hammer, cellphone and charger. After meandering through various neighborhoods, Thaxton arrived downtown at about 7 a.m. and briefly considered attacking two separate traffic officers with the hammer so he could steal their guns, police said.

"It makes me feel powerful when I have a gun," Harper said Thaxton told police.

Deciding he might get shot in the process, Thaxton instead sat and munched on a candy bar and noticed women streaming into a 24-story high-rise, police said. Without any particular goal, Thaxton took an elevator to two upper floors, found he couldn't get around without an electric key card and went down to the 16th floor.

That's where Thaxton saw the financial firm CW Breitsman Associates and the owner's name on the door. He also saw a smartphone, TV and computer and "felt this was the office where he needed to be," Harper said.

Except for the electronics, Thaxton's choosing the office was "totally random," Harper said, noting Thaxton didn't know Breitsman or his firm, which handles union pensions and insurance funds.

Police initially believed Thaxton had a gun because he told police negotiators he was going to shoot the victim. Instead, he threatened Breitsman with the knife, sat across a table from him breathing threats and, otherwise, used Breitsman's phone and computer to post mostly forlorn Facebook messages, police said.

"i cant take it no more im done bro," said one post.

"this life im livin rite now i dnt want anymore," another post said. "ive lost everything and I aint gettin it back."

Thaxton has been in legal trouble in recent months, pleading guilty in January to robbery for a carjacking last year. That crime was apparently on his mind, Harper said, because his carjacking victim was a woman and Thaxton told police the only other reason he picked Breitsman was that "he didn't want to victimize another female."

Thaxton was sentenced to six to 12 months in jail by the county's newly established court to help veterans with mental health and substance abuse issues. It wasn't immediately clear how Thaxton's service record contributed ? if at all ? to his mental health problems because he never saw active duty.

Instead, records show Thaxton served as a private in the U.S. Army from December 2008 to June 2010. The Army said he trained at Fort Leonard Wood in Missouri before being assigned to Fort Riley in Kansas.

Whatever the motivation, Thaxton felt a need to call attention to his feelings through Facebook and told police he watched coverage of the hostage situation on his victim's TV.

Initially, police wanted the Facebook page kept open, hoping to gain useful information, but they later asked Facebook to take it down so that Thaxton could focus on conversations with police negotiators.

Most of the 700 or so responses to Thaxton's posts were from friends or family expressing their love. But a few were "ridiculous" and others were "outright distasteful," Harper said. Police were still sifting through them Friday, but Harper said any posters who authorities determine urged Thaxton to harm Breitsman or himself could eventually face charges, too.

Thaxton eventually told police negotiators he wanted to speak with an ex-girlfriend whom he hadn't seen since 2008. After shutting down the Facebook page and getting the woman on the phone to speak with Thaxton, he surrendered peacefully.

Breitsman was interviewed by detectives at police headquarters but left through a back door to avoid the media. He didn't return calls to his home Friday. Harper said the man was doing fine though "quite shaken."

Facebook didn't comment on the hostage-taking but referred reporters to a Web page that says it sometimes shares information with law enforcement if necessary to "prevent imminent bodily harm" to someone.

Some of the social network's nearly 1 billion users boast about their criminal exploits on Facebook, making it easier for law enforcement to catch them. Just last month, a woman charged with posing as a nurse and kidnapping a newborn at a Pittsburgh hospital was tracked down using messages she posted about her faked pregnancy on Facebook.

In Thaxton's case, Facebook didn't completely explain his actions nor would he as he was led past reporters at police headquarters.

Instead he grinned and ignored their questions saying, "I can't hear you, bro."

Ohio Amish sect leader, followers convicted of hate crimes

CLEVELAND (Reuters) - An Ohio Amish sect leader and 15 of his followers were convicted on Thursday of federal hate crimes in connection with a string of beard- and hair-cutting attacks on other Amish people last autumn that shook the religious community.

Samuel Mullet Sr. and each of his followers were found guilty on multiple charges stemming from attacks on six Amish men and two women, and likely face years in prison.

The jury verdict came on the fifth day of deliberations at a federal courthouse in Cleveland, which at times during the trial was filled with Amish spectators. Some witnesses said they had never been outside the counties of their birth before traveling to Cleveland for the trial.

Prosecutors contended the crimes were motivated by religious disputes between Mullet, 66, the leader of a sect in Bergholz, Ohio, and other Amish religious leaders who had accepted into their communities people Mullet had excommunicated from his.

"This was a crime of violence," U.S. Attorney Steven Dettelbach told a news conference after the verdicts. "From day one, this case has been about the rule of law and defending the right of people to worship in peace."

Defense attorneys said they would appeal the convictions. The defense called no witnesses, but attorneys had argued the assaults were the result of family or financial disputes and not religious differences, and therefore could not be classified as hate crimes.

Amish women and married Amish men do not cut their hair or beards as symbols of living a religious life. The Amish are known for their plain dress, simple living and shunning of technology.

'NICKS AND CUTS'

Mullet's attorney, Edward Bryan, said jurors were left with the false impression his client had "Svengali-like control over the community."

He added that the assaults at the center of the trial resulted in nothing more than minor injuries, adding the defendants "are facing life in prison on nicks and cuts."

Mullet was convicted on seven of the nine charges against him. He was not present for any of the attacks, but prosecutors accused him of encouraging and even orchestrating them.

All 15 of Mullet's followers were convicted of at least one charge in addition to conspiracy. Jurors acquitted the defendants on charges related to an attack on one man whose hair and beard were cut, but who sustained no other injuries.

Jurors heard testimony that Mullet's followers had restrained the assault victims and forcibly cut their hair and beards, using scissors, clippers, shears and battery-operated razors.

Prosecutors and witnesses said the attacks were discussed openly by Mullet's followers, some of whom brought back hair they had cut off as trophies or took pictures of the victims to show Mullet.

Witnesses also testified to Mullet's power over the group.

Mullet's daughter-in-law testified she had been sexually intimate with her father-in-law in what the sect leader called "sexual counseling." She told jurors she believed it was wrong, but was too afraid to say no to Mullet.

Prosecutors presented recordings of jail-house phone calls between Mullet and his followers where they laughed about one beard-cutting attack and made plans for more assaults.

Federal guidelines call for a sentence of 210 months in prison for hate crimes. Some defendants remain out on bond, while others, including Mullet have been held without bond.

Judge Dan Polster scheduled sentencing for January 24.

Colorado man awarded $7.2 mill in "popcorn lung" lawsuit

DENVER (Reuters) - A U.S. federal court jury on Wednesday awarded a Colorado man $7.2 million in damages for developing a chronic condition known as popcorn lung from a chemical used in flavoring microwave popcorn.

Jurors agreed with the claims by Wayne Watson, 59, that the popcorn manufacturer and the supermarket chain that sold it were negligent by failing to warn on labels that the butter flavoring, diacetyl, was dangerous.

The condition is a form of obstructive lung disease that makes it difficult for air to flow out of the lungs and is irreversible, according to WebMd.

Watson, of suburban Denver, was the first consumer of microwave popcorn diagnosed with the disease, bronchiolitis obliterans, his attorney Kenneth McClain said.

Watson was diagnosed in 2007 at Denver's National Jewish Health, a respiratory health center, after years of inhaling the smell of artificial butter on the popcorn he said he ate daily.

The verdict was the latest in a line of cases in the past 15 years, starting with workers in popcorn plants where diacetyl was an ingredient, that has linked the chemical to health problems.

Jurors found Gilster-Mary Lee Corp, the Chester, Illinois, private-labeling manufacturer of the popcorn, liable for 80 percent of the $7,217,961 damages and the King Soopers supermarket chain and its parent, Kroger Co, liable for 20 percent.

An attorney for the defendants had told jurors that Watson's health problems were from his years of using dangerous chemicals as a carpet cleaner.

A spokeswoman for King Soopers and Kroger said the companies intended to appeal the decision. An attorney for Gilster-Mary Lee was not immediately available for comment.

Similar cases are pending in federal court in Iowa and in state court in New York, Watson's attorney said.

McClain said he has represented microwave popcorn and flavoring workers across the United States who began suing in 2004 and have been awarded large damages.

He said Dr. Cecile Rose, a witness for Watson and one of his physicians at National Jewish Health, made the connection between his disease and diacetyl when she asked him if he had been around large quantities of microwave popcorn.

She had been a consultant to the flavorings industry and had seen the same disease that Watson had among workers exposed to the chemical.

The jury took a day to reach its verdict after a nine-day trial.

hurricane windows Austin,replacement - Do I Need Hurricane ...

The answer to this question is a simple one: If you live anywhere in the Gulf of Mexico region, you should install hurricane windows in your home or business. This is especially true for the Houston area, as its proximity to the coast makes it an easy target for strong summer storms and the occasional hurricane. Just because you've never experienced a hurricane in your area, doesn't mean you are safe from disaster. It's usually the homes that are the least prepared that assume the most damages when a hurricane comes rolling into the area. Use this guide to hurricane windows and decide for yourself whether or not you need to install these fantastic windows to keep your home safe from storms.

Protection

Gulf Coast Windows prides itself on their durable glass hurricane windows. By pressing together a polyvinyl butyral (PVB) interlayer between the two window panes under extreme pressure, superior strength is achieved. Even when the window has been shattered and broken, it still won't come loose from its frame so you don't have to worry about flying debris.

Don't bother with plywood panels, hurricane shutters or sketchy clips to cover up your windows during the hurricane season, hurricane windows are built to last through the strongest of storms and beyond. Call Gulf Coast Windows right now and learn about all of our hurricane windows today, so you can protect your home from future storm damages.

Security

Besides the powerful forces of Mother Nature that can do more than just ruin your day, there are the much more powerful forces of man. Burglaries are one of the biggest factors when it comes to home security because window panes are so easy to break and enter undetected. Because our hurricane windows are so strong, you can bet that they have the strength and durability to repeal criminals. Even when the glass panes have been smashed with a hammer, they still won't budge, keeping criminals at bay. Keep your family safe and your possessions yours by installing hurricane windows in your home or business.

Energy Efficiency

Durable and strong are just the start of owning hurricane windows. Because of their thickness, resistance to stress and layers of high tech polymers, hurricane windows from Gulf Coast Windows are very energy efficient. By preventing the harsh UV rays that strike your windows from entering the structure, they not only ensure that your energy costs remain lower, they also prevent damages from sunlight that can often fade furniture, carpets and paint. Keep your home cool in the summer, warm in the winter and your energy costs lower by installing hurricane windows.

Japan carmakers face $250 million in lost China output, new risk

TOKYO (Reuters) - Japanese automakers, led by Nissan Motor Co , have lost an estimated $250 million in output because of anti-Japan protests in China this week and now face the risk that sales will sputter in the world's largest car market.

Chinese protesters took to the streets this week in response to an escalating dispute with Japan over ownership of a group of isles in the East China Sea, prompting Japanese automakers including Toyota Motor Corp , Honda Motor Co and Nissan to temporarily halt operations at plants in China.

Lost production volume from those suspensions amounted to around 14,000 vehicles as of Thursday, according to an estimate by IHS Automotive. That would mean immediate lost revenue of about $250 million, based on an average vehicle sticker price of about $18,000 for the Japanese brands.

That toll could rise. Toyota said some of its China plants are still suspended, without specifying. Honda also has two factories halted, while Nissan has resumed operations.

Nissan has been the most successful Japanese automaker in China, and is most exposed now. Its projected sales in China account for 27 percent of its global sales volume, compared with 18 percent for Honda and 11 percent for Toyota.

Industry executives and analysts said automakers would be able to make up for lost output by running more overtime.

"What is more important is how consumers will react from now on," said Koichi Sugimoto, a senior analyst at BHP Paribas. "It wouldn't be strange if some people start thinking that it's better to buy South Korean cars then Japanese ones so that their cars won't be destroyed by demonstrators."

Moody's credit rating agency said it was hard to predict how "rising anti-Japanese sentiment" would affect business.

"The possible implications - in an extreme and unanticipated scenario - could include the loss of access to a significant and growing market ... or a reduction in the ability of Japanese manufacturers to locate facilities in China."

"CAR IS JAPANESE, MIND IS CHINESE"

With immediately recognizable logos, Japanese cars became a target of havoc for anti-Japan protesters in China. Protesters burned a Toyota dealership in Qingdao and several more dealerships suffered damage, a company spokesman said.

A Honda dealership in Beijing sent out text messages warning customers to be careful. Photos circulated online of Japanese cars carrying banners such as "Car is Japanese, Mind is Chinese" and "From now on, I will boycott Japanese goods".

Some Japanese companies are coming up with contingency plans in case tension escalates. Brake supplier Akebono Brake Industry is preparing contingency plans in case it faces problems in importing materials needed to supply automakers in China, the company's CEO told Reuters on Thursday.

Japanese firms lag rivals General Motors Co and Volkswagen in China but remain keen on expansion.

Toyota aims to double sales in China to 1.8 million cars by 2015. Akio Toyoda, the president of Toyota, said Chinese consumers would recognize the contributions of Japanese automakers and their Chinese partners to the Chinese economy.

"I hope the problem will be resolved soon so that Japanese cars will be back on shopping lists," he told reporters.

For its part, Nissan plans to boost sales in China to 2.3 million vehicles in 2015 and has launched the made-in-China brand name Venucia together with its joint venture partner Dongfeng Motor Group Co .

Reflecting market worries about the fallout, Nissan's Credit Default Swaps have been rising all week and hit a six-week high on Thursday.

Sales in China's auto market grew sharply in 2009 and 2010, but growth fell to 5.2 percent in 2011. Sales are up 4 percent in 2012 so far.

The Toyota Camry, Nissan Teana and Honda Accord represent three of the top five selling mid-size cars in China.

While the current tension may create an opening for brands like Hyundai , auto market share is unlikely to shift much as long as Beijing moves to contain the protests, said Michael Dunne, a Hong Kong-based auto consultant.

"It's a secret to no one that there is a certain animosity that Chinese people feel to Japan for historical reasons. At the same time, it has not stopped them from buying millions of Japanese cars," he said. "As much as they love their flag, they love their money more."

Microsoft raises stock dividend 15 percent

By Bill Rigby, Reuters

SEATTLE?- Microsoft raised its dividend by 15 percent on Tuesday, increasing its dividend yield to about 2.9 percent, at the high end of the technology sector.

The world's largest software company said it will start paying 23 cents per share per quarter in December, up from 20 cents. That is the seventh increase since it started paying a regular quarterly dividend in 2004.

Microsoft, whose share price has been static for the last decade, was one of the first big tech companies to introduce a dividend, starting with an annual payout in 2003, then a special dividend and regular quarterly payments the year after.

Its new dividend yield of 2.9 percent, based on its closing share price of $31.17, compares with about 3.9 percent for Intel Corp and 1.6 percent for IBM, which are both long-time dividend payers.

Cisco, which paid out its first quarterly dividend last year, stands around 2.9 percent. Apple, which restarted dividends after a 12-year hiatus only this year, is about 1.5 percent. Google does not pay dividends.

(AP) ? Top Chinese leaders have a better understanding of America's new focus on the Asia-Pacific region, but they are concerned that there is too much emphasis on China's military build-up rather than economic or diplomatic efforts, U.S. Defense Secretary Leon Panetta said Wednesday.

After two days of meetings with political and military officials, Panetta said he comes away hopeful that the two nations can work together to bolster security in the region.

While it appears Panetta is not leaving China with any tangible agreements, he believed he had assured his hosts that U.S. plans to add troops, ships and a new missile defense site in the region are not meant to threaten China.

"The key for them is that as we develop and strengthen our presence here, that we do it in conjunction with developing a strong U.S.-China relationship," Panetta told reporters shortly after he met with China's future leader, Vice President Xi Jinping. "That gave me a lot of hope that they understand exactly what our whole intention is here."

More broadly, Panetta's time in China was focused on slowly repairing America's long troubled military relationship with China ? and opening the door for better communications so that the two nations can avoid misunderstandings.

Still, his visit came as violent protests raged around the country, over a territorial dispute between China and Japan. The U.S. says it will remain neutral in the matter. But protesters slammed America, charging that the increased U.S. activity in the region has emboldened Japan and other countries to challenge China in such disputes.

Panetta spent much of his time explaining the U.S. military's new shift to the Pacific, which has fueled worries of increased tensions or conflict with China and its 2.3 million-member People's Liberation Army. In a speech to Chinese troops Wednesday, he laid out a more pointed argument that the growing American presence in the region includes an effort to build a stronger relationship with Beijing.

"Our rebalance to the Asia-Pacific region is not an attempt to contain China. It is an attempt to engage China and expand its role in the Pacific," Panetta said in a speech to cadets and young officers at the Engineering Academy of PLA Armored Forces. "It is about creating a new model in the relationship of two Pacific powers."

He acknowledged that improving relations and building trust will take time and said, "Despite the distance ... that we have traveled over the past 40 years, it is clear that this journey is not yet complete, particularly for our two militaries."

Tensions between the U.S. and China have reverberated across the region, often focused on America's support of Taiwan, which China regards as a breakaway province. China has threatened to use force to block any Taiwanese bid for formal independence.

The U.S. also has been very vocal in blaming China for cyberattacks that emanate from the country and steal critical data from U.S. government agencies and American companies.

Panetta has stressed that change will take time. But he said he sees real progress towards building a military-to-military relationship with China.

"We will have our differences," Panetta told reporters. "But the key is if we can have open communications and the ability to express views in a candid way... that more than almost anything else can lead to improved relations between the U.S. and China."

Panetta met Wednesday with Xi, who reappeared just days ago after a puzzling two-week disappearance that raised questions about his health.

Xi stood to greet the American delegation in a lavish room in the Great Hall of the People and energetically shook Panetta's hand. Once seated, he said Panetta's visit "will be very helpful in further advancing the state-to-state and military-to-military relations between our two countries."

Panetta told Xi that the two Pacific powers have common concerns and that he is confident they will be able to improve their dialogue.

While Panetta's meetings with Chinese leaders this week touched on many of the disagreements between the two countries, his address to the academy stressed the need for each nation to trust the other and try to cooperate and communicate more. It is time, he said, to stop focusing on areas of dispute and suspicion and see the potential in areas where the two nations can work together.

Panetta's message to the Chinese troops built on his speech at the security conference in Singapore earlier this year, when he introduced America's new military focus on the Pacific to Asian nations.

He told the academy gathering Wednesday that America's future security and prosperity would be linked to Asia more than any other place in the world, but that it also is a region threatened by terrorism, nuclear proliferation, piracy and natural disasters. This is Panetta's first visit to China as defense secretary, and he is the first Pentagon chief to visit the academy.

While he did not specifically mention the new planned radar system in Japan that he announced earlier this week in Tokyo, Panetta issued a broader declaration that any such missile defense move by the U.S. was aimed directly at North Korea.

Pyongyang's moves to enrich uranium and test ballistic missiles are a direct threat to the security of Asia and the United States, he said, adding that "ballistic missile defense systems are designed to foster peace and stability in the region."

Chicago teachers strike: 3pm vote on deal

Kids may be back in school on Monday if the Chicago Teachers Union is able to reach an agreement about salary increases, teacher evaluations and rehiring policy for laid off teachers. NBC's Rehema Ellis reports.

By Phil Rogers and Alexandra Clark, NBCChicago.com

CHICAGO -- Chicago teachers? union delegates will vote 3 p.m. Sunday (4 p.m. ET) on whether to end their week-long strike after a deal was hammered out late Saturday night.

Members of the Chicago Teachers Union could vote to accept the news contract, ending the city?s first teacher strike in 25 years and 350,000 students could be back in the classroom as early as Monday. But delegates could ask for 24-hours to talk to individual members in their schools before making a decision on what to do next.

?We are a democratic body and therefore we want to ensure all of our members have had the chance to weigh-in on what we were able to win,? said CTU President Karen Lewis. ?We believe this is a good contract, however, no contract will solve all of the inequities in our District."

Also, delegates are not the ones who will sign off on the new contract, union leadership explained. That responsibility remains with the union rank and file.

Negotiators started the day with a vow to remain at the table all day, to hammer out final details in an agreement which could open classroom doors again on Monday.

"Hopefully we can do it," said CTU Vice President Jesse Sharkey said on Saturday before heading into talks to end the week-long teacher strike. "But like I said, the devil's in the details in the contracts, and we want it in writing."

The talks, which began at 9 a.m. Saturday, took most of the day and were still going on 12 hours later. Both sides are working out the details to a "tentative" contract that could suspend the strike and put students back in class.

Once the language of the contract is decided, it will go to the union's House of Delegates for approval. Both sides have expressed a desire to have the contract ready for approval by Sunday.

Even though an agreement is still being negotiated, Sharkey thinks the strike itself was a victory for his members.

"Educators in the city of Chicago feel like they've had their voices heard for the first time in a very long time," he said. "Frankly we're tired of the political establishment taking credit for every gain the schools make, when we're the ones who do all the work."

Earlier in the day, Mayor Rahm Emanuel had no words about the possibility of an agreement and refused all questions pertaining to the strike as he worked the crowd at the Mexican Independence Parade.

Around the same time in Union Park, an estimated 2,500 teachers and supporters gathered for a "Solidarity Rally."

Watch the Top Videos on NBCNews.com

Lewis was one of the 20 speakers who took to the stage during the rally and applauded the teachers for standing their ground while reminding them the work was not over.

"We are still on strike," Lewis told the crowd decked out in red. "We have a framework; we do not have an agreement."

On Friday, leaders on both sides of Chicago's teacher strike said they have a "framework" in place to end the stalemate that's embroiled the city and kept students out of classes for a full week.

Chicago's first teacher strike in 25 years could end Sunday if the union's House of Delegates approves that action. The delegates are not the ones who will sign off on the new contract, however, union leadership explained. That responsibility remains with the union rank and file.

For heart health, fish oil pills not the answer: study

(Reuters) - Omega-3 fatty acids, found in oily fish such as sardines and salmon and once touted as a way of staving off heart disease and stroke, don't help after all, according to a Greek study.

Based on a review and analysis of previous clinical trials including more than 68,000 participants, Greek researchers whose report appeared in the Journal of the American Medical Association said the fatty acids have no impact on overall death rates, deaths from heart disease, or strokes and heart attacks.

This was true whether they were obtained from supplements such as pills, or from fish in the diet, said the researchers, led by Mosef Elisef at the University Hospital of Ioannina.

"Overall, omega-3...supplementation was not associated with a lower risk of all-cause mortality, cardiac death, sudden death, myocardial infarction, or stroke based on relative and absolute measures of association," Elisef and his team wrote.

A decade ago, medical evidence suggested that boosting omega-3s, including the acids known as EPA and DHA, with food or supplements had a strong protective effect even though the mechanism wasn't understood.

Scientists cited improvements in levels of triglycerides - a type of fat in the blood - as well as blood pressure levels and heart rhythm disturbances.

But since then, the picture has grown clouded. Earlier this year, a group of Korean researchers found that omega-3 supplements had no effect on heart disease or death based on 20,000 participants in previous trials.

The current study pooled results of 18 clinical trials that assigned participants randomly to take either omega-3 supplements, or not. It also includes two trials in which people got dietary counseling to increase their consumption of omega-3 rich foods.

Because the trials in the Greek analysis went as far back as 1989, researchers also considered whether growing use of statins and other medications could explain why later studies failed to support the earlier findings. But Elisef and his team said that wasn't the case.

Because people who eat a lot of fish have been found to have less heart disease, researchers figured that perhaps putting the supposed "active ingredients" in a pill could provide similar benefits, said Alice Lichtenstein, director of the Cardiovascular Nutrition Laboratory at Tufts University in Boston.

"What we have learned over the years is you can't think about individual nutrients in isolation," she added.

People who eat fish often may be replacing things like steak, hamburgers or quiche, making for a healthier diet.

Instead of supplements, Lichtenstein recommended eating fish at least twice a week, having a diet rich in whole grains and vegetables, getting lots of physical activity, and not smoking.

Updated: Authorities seek Rosemead wrestling coach accused of child molestation

Herbert Daniel Ortiz, 29, of Baldwin Park is wanted for allegedly molesting a 14-year-old boy. He used to be an assistant wrestling coach at Rosemead High School, and has since worked at a children's wrestling club in Rosemead which he founded in 2010. (Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department)

Detectives sought the public's help Tuesday in tracking down a 29-year-old Baldwin Park man accused of molesting a teenage boy after the alleged victim's mother was alerted to the abuse by a YouTube video, authorities said.

Herbert Daniel Ortiz, also known as Herbert Ortiz Monroy, molested the teenage boy while working as an assistant wrestling coach at Rosemead High School, where he was employed from 2007 to 2009, Los Angeles County sheriff's officials said.

Ortiz founded the Bad News Panthers Kids' Wrestling Program in Rosemead in 2010, and has worked their as coach and program director since, according to sheriff's investigators and the programs website.

A video posted on YouTube.com helped identify Ortiz as a suspect after the victim's mother came across it on the Internet, officials said.

"In the video, another male alleged he was victimized by the suspect and was warning viewers, specifically those residing in Rosemead, California, to protect their children," sheriff's officials said in a written statement. "The mother recognized the suspect as a former assistant wresting coach at Rosemead High School and asked her 14-year old son if he had been a victim. Her son then disclosed the sexual abuse by the suspect."

The molestation was ongoing, involving "multiple incidents," Sgt. Dan Scott of the sheriff's Special Victims Bureau said. The crimes are alleged to have taken place in Rosemead, Baldwin Park and El Monte.

In the original video, a young man,

who is now an adult, said he had been abused by Ortiz, showed his picture and warned others about the abuse, Scott said.

"We have talked to him," Scott said of the young man who posted the online video. "We're doing follow up interviews with him. There are allegations dating back to 2002."

The investigation into the video poster's allegations remained ongoing, Scott said, and prosecution for the older crimes was a possibility.

Investigators were still looking into whether any formal allegations were made against Ortiz in the past, he added.

"Investigators believe there may be additional victims who may have been sexually abused by the suspect," the sheriff's statement said.

Detectives have been unable to find Ortiz, and believe the suspect was aware of the Internet video that had been posted, and that investigators are seeking him, Scott said.

The Bad News Panthers website states that Ortiz, "established the kids wrestling program based on a simple vision of creating an outlet for local youths to come and test their inner strengths; to encourage the kids to challenge themselves, and teaching them to 'dream big'. His basic principle, 'Good discipline and good habits will be rewarded with great success on and off the Mat.'"

The website also describes Ortiz as a Rosemead High School graduate and former assistant coach at Granby High School in Virginia.

The website was no longer accessible Wednesday, and representatives of the Bad News Panther's Kids Wrestling Program could not be reached by telephone.

Scott said investigators are in the process of interviewing wrestlers at the Bad News Panthers club, as well as others who have had contact with Ortiz.

Anyone who spots Ortiz is asked to call 9-1-1 immediately. Parents, possible victims or anyone with information can reach the sheriff's Special Victims Bureau at 877-710-5273 or via email at specialvictimsbureau@lasd.org. Tips can also be submitted anonymously by calling L.A. Crime Stoppers at 800-222-8477.
