Hold Baby Showers, Not Political Debates | Christianity Today

Planned Parenthood recently announced a move away from the label "pro-choice," following survey results showing nearly 25 percent of voters do not identify with traditional abortion labels and another 25 percent do not have strong associations with a political platform.

On the 40th anniversary of Roe v. Wade, this is where we find ourselves. While most of us have strong opinions on abortion, the political framing of the issue remains polarizing and unable to fully communicate what we believe and feel. We've become strangely disconnected from such an important issue.

Since we don't often think, talk or pray about abortion outside of politics, we also can't expect much to change. The survey results led me to ask: Is God calling his people to move beyond a political platform on abortion and offer a complete expression of his heart?

Most Christians agree that God creates all life, beginning at conception. Psalm 139:13-18 paints a vivid picture of a loving God being intimately involved in forming each of us, with a specific plan for our lives. He could have chosen to bring us into the world in any number of ways, but his design is pregnancy. Pregnancy has to be a major part of our theology when we look at abortion. It's a time and an experience like no other: for nine months, the welfare of the child and the woman are intertwined. Everything done to one impacts the other.

Political platforms fail offer a complete expression of God's heart because each side chooses one individual's needs to focus on. Pro-life focuses mainly on the needs of the child. Pro-choice focuses mainly on the needs of the woman. God wants to meet the needs of both. We must engage in work that addresses the needs of child and mother, creating an environment that supports both during and after unplanned pregnancy.

A single woman often experiences an identity shift during an unplanned pregnancy that leaves her believing she has become "that girl." Research at the pregnancy center I lead in Chicago shows how a single woman expects shame and judgment on such a scale that life as she knows it will be over. She feels she either has to have an abortion to try and become herself again, or she has to resign herself to overwhelming struggle as a single mom.

We've also found that when we show grace to a woman facing an unplanned pregnancy, when we offer acceptance and support, it can change the way she thinks about herself, her future, and the future of her child. There's not a lot of grace in our culture for a single woman who gets pregnancy unexpectedly. The standard wisdom is that she has just wrecked her life, de-railed her future. And yet we expect these women to go ahead and have their babies without outside support?

I've heard accounts from single women whose churches would not hold baby showers for them when they were faced with unplanned pregnancies. A Christian response of grace, acceptance and support would look more like this:

  • We can acknowledge that pregnancy is not a sin. Rather, sex outside the context of marriage is the sin. We can also acknowledge that many more Christians are engaged in sexual immorality, including pornography, than just women who get pregnant. We must talk about our theology of sexual purity all the time and with everyone involved, not just women facing unplanned pregnancy.
  • We then can apply grace. We all need God's forgiveness through the blood of Christ, and grace offers us the path towards transformation through the power of the Spirit.

Skin Care Products: What 'Natural,' 'Hypoallergenic' And 'Unscented ...

By Jenny Bailly

Don?t be fooled by these buzzwords: Four of the most common claims you see on skin care products can be misleading. Dermatologist Leslie Baumann, MD, tells us what these popular terms really mean.

1. 'Unscented'
What you think it means: Free of any fragrances.
What it really means: The product doesn?t have a detectable odor -- but may contain fragrances to mask its natural scent. If you?re trying to avoid fragrance ingredients (which are the most common allergens found in skincare products), ?fragrance-free? is a better label to look for -- although it, too, can be tricky. ?If the primary reason for including a fragrance is not related to scent -- some fragrances, for example, can act as preservatives -- then a product may still be labeled fragrance-free,? says Baumann.
What to look for instead: If possible, test products labeled fragrance-free on your inner wrist and wait a day to see if you have any reaction. You can also scan ingredient lists for the most common fragrances that cause allergies: cinnamic alcohol, cinnamic aldehyde, eugenol, hydroxy-citronellal, geraniol, isoeugenol, and oak moss absolute.

2. 'Natural'
What you think it means: Contains only -- or mostly -- plant and mineral ingredients.
What it really means: Whatever a manufacturer wants. There is no standard for the term ?natural,? so each brand uses it however it wishes. On some labels, ?natural? means that a product contains one or two essential oils (plus a whole lot of high-tech ingredients); on others, ?natural? really does describe a formula without any synthetic ingredients.
What to look for instead: If synthetic-free beauty products are important to you, look for one of several green seals that are regulated by third-party organizations. To earn the USDA?s Organic designation, for example, a beauty product must contain at least 95 percent ingredients that are certified organic (natural and grown without certain pesticides or fertilizers) by the Department of Agriculture?s National Organic Program. (Check out our guide to this and three other seals you might see in the beauty aisle.)

3. 'Firming'
What you think it means:Proven to make skin look more taut.
What it really means: Essentially nothing. ?There is no objective way to measure firming,? says Baumann. ?When a brand says their product has been shown to firm your skin, that claim can only be based on very subjective consumer perception.?
What to look for instead: When your skin feels plump, it also feels -- and looks -- firmer. And the most effective way to plump your skin is with a good moisturizer. Your best bets are creams and lotions with humectants like hyaluronic acid and glycerin. Products that contain sugars will also temporarily smooth and tighten the skin; look for dextrose, sucrose, or other -oses on the ingredients list.

4. 'Hypoallergenic'
What you think it means:Won?t cause an allergic reaction.
What it really means: Often not much. To determine if a product is ?hypoallergenic,? a company should perform patch tests on 100 to 200 subjects and wait several days -- even weeks -- to see how their skin reacts. ?Hypoallergenic? has no official definition, however, and the extent of any testing completed varies widely.
What to look for instead: Because there is not one type of ?sensitive? skin, consider avoiding the specific ingredients that are most likely to cause a reaction in your skin. If you?re acne-prone, for example, stay away from isopropyl myristate and coconut oil. If products often make your skin sting, don?t use anything with lactic acid, glycolic acid, azelaic acid or benzyl alcohol. If you suffer from itchy rashes, look for formulas free of fragrances, cetyl alcohol and parabens. (To find out more about which skin sensitivities you?re prone to, take Baumann?s quiz at skintypesolutions.com.)

Allen Frances: Terrible News: DSM-5 Refuses to Reduce Overdiagnosis of 'Somatic Symptom Disorder'

Many of you will have read a previous blog prepared by Suzy Chapman and me that contained alarming information about the new DSM-5 diagnosis "somatic symptom disorder" (SSD).

DSM-5 defines SSD so over-inclusively that it will mislabel one in six people with cancer and heart disease, one in four with irritable bowel syndrom and fibromyalgia, and one in 14 who are not even medically ill.

I hoped to be able to influence the DSM-5 work group to correct this in two ways: 1) by suggesting improvements in the wording of the SSD criteria set that would reduce mislabeling, and 2) by letting them know how much opposition they would face from concerned professionals and an outraged public if DSM-5 failed to slam on the brakes while there was still time.

And many of you tried to help by making clear just how important this issue is in people's lives. The blog post got many tens of thousands of views, was reposted on 70 additional sites, was widely tweeted and posted on Facebook, and elicited more than 400 extremely well-informed and often passionate comments, unanimously in strong opposition.

We have failed, and DSM-5 has failed us. For reasons that I can't begin to fathom, DSM-5 has decided to proceed on its mindless and irresponsible course. The sad result will be the mislabeling of potentially millions of people with a fake mental disorder that is unsupported by science and flies in the face of common sense.

I suggested simple wording changes in the DSM-5 definition of SSD that would have tightened it significantly and reduced confusion at the difficult boundary between medical and mental illness. Na?vely I thought that my suggestions were so obviously necessary that DSM-5 would find them easy to accept and impossible to refuse.

The new criteria set would have made it much clearer that the person's concern about physical symptoms had to be "excessive, maladaptive, pervasive, persistent, intrusive, extremely anxiety-provoking, disproportionate and consuming enough time to cause significant disruption and impairment in daily life."

And I also suggested adding these new items to the criteria set to reduce the most common sources of inappropriate overdiagnosis of SSD:

  • "If a diagnosed medical condition is present, the thoughts, feelings and behaviors must be grossly in excess of what would be expected given the nature of the medical condition."
  • "If no medical diagnosis has yet been made, a thorough medical work-up should be performed and be repeated again at suitable intervals to uncover possible medical conditions that may declare themselves with the passage of time."
  • "The concern about physical symptoms should not be not better accounted for by another mental disorder (e.g., anxiety, depressive or psychotic disorder)."

Many of you would argue that I didn't go nearly far enough, that there should be no "somatic symptom disorder" at all in DSM-5 because there is no substantial body of evidence to support either its reliability or its validity. People who are concerned about medical problems would either not be diagnosed with any mental disorder or, when necessary, would get a much more benign and nonspecific diagnosis of "adjustment disorder."

I am sympathetic to this view, but I realized that it would have no traction with the work group, so I chose instead to lobby for what seemed to be clearly essential and relatively easy changes that would solve most, if not all, of the problem.

My goal was to make it almost impossible for DSM-5 to say "no" to what are obviously needed improvements. My suggestions were no more than standard stuff, just the typical exclusionary wording that has always been used in DSM criteria sets to encourage careful differential diagnosis and to reduce inaccurate overdiagnosis. Making the changes so easy was intended to be the carrot.

And I also brandished a stick. My letter cautioned DSM-5 that it was invading dangerous territory. Here was my warning to the DSM-5 work group:

  • "Clearly you have paid close attention only to the need to reduce false negatives but have not protected sufficiently against the serious problem of creating false positives. You are not alone in this blind spot; in my experience, inattention to false positive risk is an endemic problem for all experts in any field. But your prior oversight needs urgent correction before you go to press with a criteria set that is so unbalanced that it will cause grave harms."
  • "When psychiatric problems are misdiagnosed in the medically ill, the patients are stigmatized as 'crocks,' and the possible underlying medical causes of their problems are much more likely to be missed."
  • "Continuing with your current loose wording will be bad for the patients who are mislabeled and will also be extremely harmful to DSM-5, to APA and to your own professional reputations."

I also raised the point that this could lead to a boycott of DSM-5. Pretty strong stuff, I thought. But it was totally ineffective. DSM-5 remained blind to dangers and deaf to entreaties. Its startling failure to correct this obvious and harmful mistake is breathtakingly wrongheaded and exceeds even my most pessimistic expectations about DSM-5's lack of competence and credibility.

Suzy Chapman is not surprised. For three years she has been engaged in a determined effort to educate professionals and the public about the problems in DSM-5 and has been doing her best to help correct them. Her website provides the most complete documentation of everything related to DSM-5 and ICD-11.

Ms Chapman writes:

Unfortunately, the DSM 5 invitation for comments from the field turned out to be no more than an empty public relations show. For the second stakeholder review of DSM 5 draft criteria, the SSD disorder section attracted more submissions than almost any other section. Yet still the Work Group barreled blindly on with suggestions that were roundly opposed as hurtful to the medically ill -- shrugging off criticism from professionals and remaining completely unreceptive to advocacy organization and patient concern.

For its third draft, rather than revise in favor of less inclusive criteria, the Work Group's response was to lower the threshold even further -- reducing the requirement for "at least two from the B type criteria" to just one -- placing even more medical patients at risk of attracting an inappropriate mental health diagnosis.

Many years ago, the late Thomas Szasz said: "In the days of the Malleus, if the physician could find no evidence of natural illness, he was expected to find evidence of witchcraft: today, if he cannot diagnose organic illness, he is expected to diagnose mental illness." DSM 5's loosely defined Somatic Symptom Disorder is Szasz worst fear come true.

Thank you, Ms Chapman. I think Szasz' general critique of psychiatry was far too broad, but he certainly did hit the nail right on the head when it comes to DSM-5 and its cavalier treatment of the medically ill. The DSM-5 debacle is a sad moment in the history of psychiatry. Patients deserve better, and so does the profession of psychiatry.

The American Psychiatric Association has proven itself incompetent to produce a safe and scientifically sound diagnostic system. Psychiatric diagnosis has become too important in people's lives to be left in the hands of one small and insulated professional organization. It is time for a change. Toni Bernhard has interesting thoughts on this.

My heart goes out to all those who will be mislabeled with this misbegotten diagnosis. And I regret and apologize for my failure to be more effective.

Allen Frances is a professor emeritus at Duke University and was the chairman of the DSM-IV task force.

Dot Earth Blog: Is 'Wild West' Era for Fracking Coming to an End?

While in Washington to run a panel at an invaluable conference on disasters and the environment this week, I spent a few minutes in a studio to discuss the issues and opportunities surrounding hydraulic fracturing for natural gas (and oil) on the Current TV show The War Room, hosted by Jennifer Granholm, the former governor of Michigan.

I describe my recent posts on ways to identify gas leaks or prove ? one way or the other ? if water contamination came from a particular well. We talked about big impediments to the development of China?s huge shale gas reserves or increasing exports of liquefied natural gas to Asia. I also stressed that President Obama?s ?all of the above? energy strategy could be disrupted by cheap gas ? without an overarching energy policy to sustain investments advancing the next generation of non-polluting energy technologies.

Here?s an excerpt from a related post on the program?s blog:

Hydraulic fracturing, or fracking, has remade the global energy market and could propel the United States to the top of the energy pack. New U.S. crude oil and natural gas supplies have driven down the average price per barrel and led oil giants like Saudi Arabia to?reduce their own production in order to stabilize prices.

The U.S. boom has also brought millions in development dollars to states like Colorado, Texas, Pennsylvania and Wyoming. And this year, we?ll see a host of new states consider getting into the lucrative fracking game.?Under withering pressure from environmentalists and industrialists, New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo has yet to decide whether his state will following neighboring Pennsylvania in developing its portion of the Marcellus shale.

Surprisingly, California may be the next gas game changer, with an estimated?400 billion barrels of oil potentially buried in its Monterey shale. That?s the one of the largest reserves in the country and is equivalent to roughly half of Saudi Arabia?s conventional oil resources. California state regulators have proposed new fracking rules and auctioned off the first Monterey tract in December. [Read the rest.]

Air Freight A Growing Necessity For Todays Businessmen

By: Discount Freight

With the increasing number of diverse businesses, the demand of air freight services has reached soaring heights. In comparison to sea and ground cargo shipping, air cargo services hardly take time to deliver goods at any corner of the world. In fact, such shipments travel out of passenger as well as aviation gateways to any location where airplanes can land. There are several businesses where a huge number of goods are shipped on almost a daily basis. Air cargo services here play a key role in delivering goods to the right destination with supreme efficiency and absolute rapidity.
How advantageous is Air Freight Shipping?
If there is anything that makes air freight a precious alternative, its the express shipping options. These are quite helpful in supervising time sensitive consignments to almost any corner of the globe. In fact, smaller companies can benefit a lot since they will be permitted to take part in the global trade and that too in an expeditious manner. Moreover, the option of shipping by air is always advantageous since the airport authorities ensure a strong level of security as well as tight management over goods.
How to manage Air Freight with a customs broker?
Firms involved in customs brokerage can settle on the most lucrative and trustworthy medium to use air cargo options for shipping corporate as well as individual parcels. In fact, customer brokers will be able to negotiate over a wide range of options and also choose the best and applicable medium for assuring timely delivery.
As far as the global shipping policies go, the procedures for customer clearance must not only be properly executed but most importantly documented. If you are working with a customs broker for shipping goods through air, you must ensure that each and every aspect of your air cargo management has been covered.
How Airline Freight operates?
In reality, you can deliver just anything through air. Whether you are looking forward to deliver cars, letters, packages or weighty equipments, all can be shipped through air. In fact, there are several commercial airlines that keep transporting tones of goods throughout the year. So, if you are planning to choose your preferred plane through which you will be sending all your merchandise, here are three options you can always consider:
-Freight riding on passenger airlines
-Freight rising on dedicated cargo planes
-Massive payloads riding in super cargo planes
5 reasons why people choose air freight services today
oReliability Since the airline freight costs are quite high, the need for maximum utility pops up. Consequently, the arrival and departure schedules of flights remain strongly reliable.
oSpeed Speed and frequency are the two most crucial factors usually considered by customers in case they need to ship their goods earlier.
oNo warehousing One is not required to hire any local warehouse for preserving goods or expensive stocks for handling air cargo.
oFinancial limitations Since air freight rates are quite high in comparison to those charged against marine or ground transportation, the capital gets freed that actually ties up with the long transit time taken to deliver goods at the customers premises.
oInsurance - The insurance premium is usually lower for air cargo since the transportation time for air cargo is comparatively shorter.

About the Author:
The author, Mr. Farhan who is working as a ground staff in an airport gives us a detailed overview on air freight rates and its diverse aspects. Apart from letting us know about its advantages and operational procedures, he has also given us a handful of suggestions on how to save money by choosing discounted freight rates.

China: One-child policy stays

Alexander F. Yuan/AP

Parents play with their children at a kid's play area in a shopping mall in Beijing on Jan. 10.

By Le Li and Alastair Jamieson, NBC News

BEIJING ? China has quelled speculation its controversial "one-child" policy is to be scrapped, instead announcing Wednesday that family planning laws to curb the birth rate will remain.

"The policy should be a long-term one and its primary goal is to keep a low birthrate," Wang Xia, minister in charge of the National Population and Family Planning Commission, said.

The pronouncement comes after months of speculation that the decades-old restriction would be abandoned.

In October, a Chinese government think tank urged the policy be relaxed to allow two children for every family in the country by 2015.

"I?m surprised," said Professor Shaun Breslin, associate fellow at U.K. think tank, Chatham House. "Almost everything we had heard in recent months pointed towards a relaxation of one-child."

The 1979 law prohibits about one-third of China?s 1.3 billion citizens from having a second child. The policy is officially backed up by fines, but campaigners say more than one million forced abortions are carried out every year.

It has slowed the spectacular growth of the country?s population, preventing an estimated 400 million births over three decades.

In a related statement on Wednesday,?the family planning commission said China?s current low birthrate "is not stable because, with the exception of some developed cities, the fertility level in most of China's regions will rise if the basic state policy of family planning is abolished."

"Therefore it is necessary to stick to the basic state policy of family planning to stabilize the current low fertility level," it added.

Breslin said China?s looming demographic crisis ? a huge elderly population supported by a relatively tiny younger generation ? highlighted social problems such as the need for greater universal healthcare.

"For most Chinese people the current system works fine if you have a sore throat, but a knee operation could use up all your savings," he said. "That means many are keen to ensure they have a male child in order to ensure there is enough income in the family."

He added that Wednesday?s announcement did not mean China?s new leadership was eschewing economic or social reforms. "It can take a year or two for any new leadership in China to introduce change," he said.

Professor Hu Xingdou, of the Beijing Institute of Technology,?told the South China Morning Post it would be difficult for the government to abolish the one-child policy overnight.

"China still needs a family-planning policy due to our vast population and lack of cropland, as well as the relative deficiency of per capita resources,? he said.

The one-child rule is mainly enforced in urban areas.

Wang also announced an expansion of rural healthcare provision for pregnant women, and said efforts "should also be made to rectify the imbalance in gender ratio."

She also said a "complete working system" would be established to "in light of the great numbers of young migrant workers flocking to the cities for jobs."

France boosts military presence in Mali

JOHANNESBURG, South Africa ? France boosted its troops in Mali on Tuesday as armored vehicles arrived in the capital, Bamako, as part of a planned 2,500-strong deployment to battle Al Qaeda-linked militants.

France now has about 750 troops in Mali, said President Francois Hollande, who outlined plans to more than triple the French force to help destroy Al Qaeda-linked groups in northern Mali and restore the West African nation's territorial integrity and political stability.

"We have one goal," Hollande said at a news conference in the United Arab Emirates. "To ensure that when we leave, when we end our intervention, Mali is safe, has legitimate authorities, an electoral process and there are no more terrorists threatening its territory."

France, the former colonial power in Mali and other parts of West Africa, fears that Al Qaeda has been building a haven from which to unleash devastating terrorist strikes on Europe, particularly the French.

France launched airstrikes Friday and sent in special forces to support Mali's ill-equipped and poorly trained army, after a request for help from Malian authorities battling rebel advances.

French warplanes continued to bomb rebel targets overnight and French news reports said Tuesday that Islamist fighters had abandoned the key towns of Gao and Timbuktu.

Defense chiefs representing the regional Economic Community of West African States met in Bamako to discuss plans to send in a 3,300-troop regional force, about 900 of whom are to come from Nigeria.

Hollande said French troops would remain in Mali until African forces could ensure stability.

"As soon as there is an African force, in the coming days or weeks, that is backed by the international community and by Europe, France will not have a reason to stay in Mali," Hollande said.

Hollande said France took action to prevent the militants from seizing Bamako and controlling the entire country. He said the French operation would secure the capital, where thousands of French citizens reside, and "enable Mali to retake its territory, a mission that has been entrusted to an African force that France will support."

A French official told the news agency Agence France-Presse that deployments from French bases in the region, including Ivory Coast, Chad and Burkina Faso, would gradually bring the troop strength to 2,500.

Mali's crisis has its roots in the 2011 fall of Moammar Kadafi's regime in Libya, which sent battle-hardened fighters streaming into Mali. They launched a rebellion, initially led by Tuaregs, to set up an independent state in the north.

The Malian military struggled to contain the rebellion and were angered by what it saw as the government's failure to equip and support the army. A group led by army Capt. Amadou Sanogo toppled the government of President Amadou Toumani Toure in a coup.

Rebels took advantage of the coup to sweep across the north, seizing the towns of Kidal, Gao and Timbuktu within days. The Tuaregs were swiftly outflanked by Al Qaeda-linked militias who took control and imposed severe Islamic law, meting out floggings, amputations and stonings, banning music, smoking and alcohol, and destroying World Heritage mausoleums in Timbuktu.

The West African regional body's forces had not expected to go into Mali until late this year, but the rebels' thrust toward Sevare in central Mali, a town with the only major airport capable of handling large cargo planes besides Bamako, triggered a swift French intervention. Questions have been raised about how battle-ready the ECOWAS troops are as they face experienced and well-armed troops used to harsh desert combat.

Mali expert Gregory Mann of Columbia University wrote in the Africa is a Country blog that France's intervention was necessary to turn back the rebel advance southward.

"The drama of the Islamist offensive should not be underestimated," he wrote. "The fall of Sevare would ? have made any future military operation a nightmare for West African or other friendly forces, and it would have chased tens of thousands of civilians from their homes."

U.S. Defense Secretary Leon E. Panetta told reporters in Lisbon that the Obama administration did not plan to put troops on the ground in Mali and that the U.S. continued to work on what type of assistance it would provide France. U.S. officials said Monday that they were preparing to ferry additional French troops to Mali and making plans to send drones or other surveillance aircraft and help with the refueling of French fighter jets.

Graphic shows AP-GfK poll opinions on gun control policies

This frame grab image shows a scene from video released by the National Rifle Association. In a sharp pushback against any new gun regulations, the NRA posted a Web video on Wednesday, Jan. 16, 2013, that labels President Barack Obama an "elitist hypocrite" for allowing his daughters to be protected by armed Secret Service agents while not embracing armed guards for schools. "Are the president's kids more important than yours?" a male narrator asks in the video. "Then why is he skeptical of putting armed security in schools, when his kids are protected by armed guards in their school?" (AP Photo/NRA)

(AP) ? Conceding "this will be difficult," President Barack Obama urged a reluctant Congress on Wednesday to require background checks for all gun sales and ban both military-style assault weapons and high-capacity ammunition magazines in an emotion-laden plea to curb gun violence in America.

The president's sweeping, $500 million plan, coming one month after the school massacre in Connecticut, marks the most comprehensive effort to tighten gun laws in nearly two decades. But his proposals, most of which are opposed by the National Rifle Association, face a doubtful future in a divided Congress where Republicans control the House.

Seeking to circumvent at least some opposition, Obama signed 23 executive actions on Wednesday, including orders to make more federal data available for background checks and end a freeze on government research on gun violence. But he acknowledged that the steps he took on his own would have less impact than the broad measures requiring approval from Capitol Hill.

"To make a real and lasting difference, Congress, too, must act," Obama said, speaking at a White House ceremony with school children and their parents. "And Congress must act soon."

The president's announcements capped a swift and wide-ranging effort, led by Vice President Joe Biden, to respond to the deaths of 20 children and six adults at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn. But Obama's gun control proposals set him up for a tough political fight with Congress as he starts his second term, when he'll need Republican support to meet three looming fiscal deadlines and pass comprehensive immigration reform.

"I will put everything I've got into this, and so will Joe," the president said. "But I tell you, the only way we can change is if the American people demand it."

Key congressional leaders were tepid in their response to the White House proposals.

Republican House Speaker John Boehner's office signaled no urgency to act, with spokesman Michael Steel saying only that "House committees of jurisdiction will review these recommendations. And if the Senate passes a bill, we will also take a look at that."

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., said he was committed to ensuring that the Senate will consider gun violence legislation "early this year." But he did not endorse any of Obama's specific proposals.

The president vowed to use "whatever weight this office holds" to fight for his recommendations. He's likely to travel around the country in the coming weeks to rally public support and could engage his still-active presidential campaign operation in the effort. But he'll have to overcome a well-financed counter-effort by the NRA.

"This will be difficult," Obama acknowledged. "There will be pundits and politicians and special interest lobbyists publicly warning of a tyrannical, all-out assault on liberty ? not because that's true, but because they want to gin up fear or higher ratings or revenue for themselves."

The president, speaking in front of an audience that included families of some of those killed in Newtown, said 900 Americans had lost their lives to gun violence in the four weeks since the school shootings.

"We can't put this off any longer," Obama declared. "Every day we wait, the number will keep growing."

Many Democrats say an assault weapons ban faces the toughest road in Congress. Obama wants lawmakers to reinstate the expired 1994 ban on the high-grade weapons, and strengthen the measure to prevent manufacturers from circumventing the prohibition by making cosmetic changes to banned guns.

The president is also likely to face opposition to his call for Congress to limit ammunition magazines to 10 rounds.

But Democrats are hopeful they can build consensus around the president's call for universal background checks. The Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence says 40 percent of gun sales are conducted with no criminal background checks, such as in some instances at gun shows or by private sellers over the Internet or through classified ads.

The NRA is opposed to all three measures. In a statement Wednesday, the gun lobby said, "Only honest, law-abiding gun owners will be affected" by Obama's efforts and the nation's children "will remain vulnerable to the inevitability of more tragedy."

And on the eve of Obama's announcement, the NRA released an online video accusing him of being an "elitist hypocrite" for sending his daughters to school with armed Secret Service agents while opposing having guards with guns at all U.S. schools.

White House spokesman Jay Carney called the video "repugnant and cowardly."

The president's proposals did include a $150 million request to Congress that would allow schools to hire 1,000 new police officers, counselors and psychologists. The White House plan also includes legislative and executive action to increase mental health services, including boosting funding for training aimed at getting young people into treatment more quickly.

A lopsided 84 percent of Americans back broader background checks, according to a new Associated Press-GfK poll. Nearly six in 10 Americans want stricter gun laws, the same poll showed, with majorities favoring a nationwide ban on military-style weapons and limits on gun violence depicted in video games, movies and TV shows.

The NRA and pro-gun lawmakers have long suggested that violent images in video games and entertainment are more to blame for mass shootings than the availability of guns. But Obama's proposals do little to address that concern, other than calling on the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to research links between violent images and gun attacks.

Government scientists have been prohibited from researching the causes and prevention of gun violence since 1996, when a budget amendment was passed that barred researchers from spending taxpayer money on such studies.

The administration is calling on Congress to provide $10 million for expanded research.

Obama also wants lawmakers to ban armor-piercing ammunition, except for use by the military and law enforcement. And he's asking them to create stiffer penalties for gun trafficking, to provide $14 million to help train police officers and others to respond to shootings, and to approve his nominee to run the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.

One of the president's executive actions on Wednesday was to nominate B. Todd Jones to head the ATF, which has been without a permanent director since 2006. Jones has served as the bureau's acting director since 2011.

Other steps Obama took through his presidential powers include:

? Ordering tougher penalties for people who lie on background checks.

? Requiring federal law enforcement to trace guns recovered in criminal investigations.

? Ordering a review of safety standards for gun locks and gun safes.

Indian soldier beheaded by Pakistan troops in Kashmir: officials in Delhi

Pledge: India's Foreign Minister Salman Khurshid.

?

An Indian soldier was beheaded by Pakistani troops in Kashmir, it was claimed today.

Officials in Delhi also claimed a second soldier was killed and mutilated in the disputed territory and summoned Pakistan?s top envoy to the capital.

The foreign ministry issued a statement in which it claimed the bodies had been subject to ?barbaric and inhuman mutilation in contravention of all norms of international conduct?.

Both countries have claimed Kashmir, in the north west of the subcontinent, as their own for more than 60 years.

India says the soldiers were killed in a firefight near Mendhar while on patrol close to the dividing line yesterday.

Troops searched the area where the soldiers were allegedly killed and claim they found just one head.

Pakistan?s foreign ministry said the allegations were ?baseless? and added it would welcome a UN probe.

It said the killings claim was a propaganda effort to deflect international attention from the death of a Pakistani soldier earlier this week.

India?s foreign minister Salman Khurshid pledged a ?proportionate? response and said the attack was ?an attempt to derail the dialogue? between the countries over Kashmir.

There has been a fragile ceasefire since 2003.

High Performance Rodeo: How Do You Choose? ? Calgary Is ...

?

There are your normal theatre festivals and then there?s the High Performance Rodeo ? a festival so filled with over-the-top performances, daring feats of theatre and amazing sights and sounds that?s it?s so hard to pick what to see you might as well throw a dart at a calendar to choose.

Now into its second week, things are heating up with some of the most anticipated shows playing this weekend, like AVATAR, Freak Show, Ride the Cyclone and, of course, Metamorphosis.

Celebrating its 27th year, the High Performance Rodeo is a must for fans of the performing arts. Held annually in the dead of winter, the festival features theatre, dance, comedy, music and multimedia presentations. It?s the largest of its kind in Western Canada and runs until February 3 at 13 venues throughout the city.

Personally, I would love to see all the shows, but for those of you on a budget, like me, picking and choosing is a must and I?m here to help you out. Here are my picks for what to see at the 2013 High Performance Rodeo.

KAFKA AND NICK CAVE: Metamorphosis, a special co-presentation with Theatre Calgary, is perhaps the most anticipated performance of this year?s High Performance Rodeo.
Photo courtesy of HPR and Bottom Line Productions

Metamorphosis
Coming all the way from Reykjavik, Iceland, the Lyric Hammersmith and Vesturport production of Metamorphosis by Franz Kafka, is a definite must see on my list. It combines classic literature, a gravity defying set and original music composed by Nick Cave and Warren Ellis (yes the two from band The Bad Seeds).
For those of you who aren?t familiar with the story, it?s pretty simple. Meet the Samsa family. Their life is ordinary and pain. That is until their son, Gregor, awakes one morning to find himself inexplicably transformed into a giant insect.
Metamorphosis runs until January 13 at the Max Bell Theatre. Tickets are a bit pricey for this one, starting at $55, but if you go to only one show this Rodeo, this is the one you want to see.

AVATAR
Being called a ?duet with technology,? AVATAR pairs up contemporary dancer Freya Bj?rg Olafson with her laptop as a partner. During the performance, she effortlessly moves through her computer, changing, manipulating and broadcasting herself as a new persona.
AVATAR runs until January 12 at the Big Secret Theatre.

Hello Moth
As part of ProArts@Noon, Hello Moth takes over the elegant Cathedral Church of the Redeemer on Wednesday, January 16 at noon with a free performance featuring a solitary musician that becomes a haunting orchestra of one.
Other ProArts@Noon performances include a piece by Calgary Opera?s Emerging Artist Ensemble on January 23 and organist Neil Cockburn on January 30.

HIGH PERFORMANCE VAUDEVILLE: Atomic Vaudeville brings Ride the Cyclone to Calgary, a musical about how the show must go on, even after death.
Photo courtesy of HPR and Bottom Line Productions

Ride the Cyclone
This is one show that?s been getting rave reviews in every town it runs in and looks hauntingly good.
In Atomic Vaudeville?s Ride the Cyclone, the audience meets a teenage chamber choir from Uranium City, Saskatchewan that died in a roller coaster accident at a travelling fair. This is their final recital.
Ride the Cyclone runs until January 12 at the Martha Cohen Theatre.

Freak Show: Tall Tales and Terrible Truths
Swallow-a-Bicycle Theatre?s piece, Freak Show, was inspired by those outrageous shows from America?s scandalous past and tells tales of creatures so bizarre, they?ll surpass your wildest dreams.
Freak Show is an original 20-minute play that?s all spectacle and runs until January 12 at the Martha Cohen Theatre Lobby (just look for the Freak Show tent). It repeats a few times though out each day, before and after performances of Ride the Cyclone, so it?s easy to catch and for those on a budget, it?s pay what you can.

FROM ONE YELLOW RABBIT: People You May Know combines simple digital effects and three live performers to create a projected community of characters.
Photo courtesy of HPR and Bottom Line Productions

People You May Know
As the ?hosts? of the High Performance Rodeo, One Yellow Rabbit?s piece is always a highlight. For this year?s festival they are premiering People You May Know ? a comedic romp that uses simple digital effects to create a projected community of characters that uses only three live performers.
People You May Know runs January 16 to February 2 at the Big Secret Theatre.

Enbridge Presents The Walrus Talks: Performance
The Walrus Talks
returns for a second year with an evening of thought-provoking ideas. Featuring talks from many great minds including Olympian and humanitarian Clara Hughes on Sport & Society, Author and Broadcaster Jay Ingram on Science and Juno Award-winner, Dan Mangan on Performing Arts, it?s an evening not to be missed.
The Walrus Talks takes the stage January 29 at the Jack Singer Concert Hall and C.I.A.?s very own Andrea Grant will be there covering the night. Make sure you check back for her coverage.

So these are just my picks and I hope I helped to make your choices a bit easier. The whole line-up can be found at the HPR website as well as ticket information, times and more.

musulmanes.

Los musulmanes son detenidos y llevados a la delegaci?n de la Polic?a del
Aeroparque, acusados de tumulto, destrozos y resistencia a la autoridad. A
