ScienceDaily (Feb. 28, 2012) ? Using high-precision microscopy and X-ray scattering techniques, University of Oregon researchers have gained eye-opening insights into the process of applying green chemistry to nanotechnology that results in high yields, improves efficiency and dramatically reduces waste and potential negative exposure to human health or the environment.
University of Oregon chemist James E. Hutchison described his lab's recent efforts to monitor the dynamics of nanoparticles in an invited talk Feb. 28 at the American Physical Society's March Meeting (Feb. 27-March 2) in Boston, Mass. It turns out, Hutchison said, that simply reducing the amount of gold -- the material used in his research -- in the initial stages of the process used to grow nanoparticles allows for better maintenance of the particle size.
That accomplishment, he said, has important implications. The use of lower concentrations of the precursor that forms the nanoparticles virtually eliminates the ability of nanoparticles to aggregate together and thus prevents variations of sizes of the desired end product.
"What we saw while observing the production process with small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) was amazing," Hutchison, said in an interview before his lecture. "We realized that it is possible to reduce the concentration of gold and allow the particles to still grow, but shutdown the coalescent, or aggregation, pathway."
He also summarized his lab's use of chemically modified grids (Smart Grids) in transmission electron microscopy to study how nanoparticles are shed from common objects such as silverware and copper jewelry -- findings that were detailed in the journal ACS Nano in October. They studied the transformation of silver nanoparticles coated on Smart Grids as well as the common objects and found that all forms produce smaller silver nanoparticles that could disperse into the environment, especially in humid air, water and light -- and likely have been doing that throughout time without any known health ramifications.
"There may be many beneficial applications to nanotechnology, but they are only beneficial if the net benefits outweigh the deleterious implications for human health and the environment," said Hutchison, who holds the Lokey-Harrington Chair in Chemistry at the University of Oregon.
These new monitoring and measuring techniques, he said, are vital to help understand what modifications are possible in the processes that grow nanoparticles for a desired product. Using green chemistry, he added, can help assure both efficiency and stability of a product, which, in turn, will lower the risk of unwanted environmental or harmful human-health consequences.
"Advancing the safe implementation of nanotechnology is vital to many fields, from electronics to medicine and materials science, in general," said Kimberly Andrews Espy, vice president for research and innovation at the UO. "Professor Hutchison has been a leader in the University of Oregon's efforts to promote green chemistry in this effort, and his work continues to set examples on how best to use it."
Hutchison is co-author of "Green Nanotechnology Challenges and Opportunities," a white paper published by the American Chemical Society's Green Chemistry Institute, and the National Research Council report, "A Research Strategy for Environmental, Health, and Safety Aspects of Engineered Nanomaterials." He also was the founding director of the Safer Nanomaterials and Nanomanufacturing Initiative (SSNI) of the Oregon Nanoscience and Microtechnologies Institute (ONAMI), a state signature research center.

ScienceDaily (Feb. 27, 2012) ? Most of us know what it means when it's said that someone is depressed. But commonly, true clinical depression brings with it a number of other symptoms. These can include anxiety, poor attention and concentration, memory issues, and sleep disturbances.
Traditionally, depression researchers have sought to identify the individual brain areas responsible for causing these symptoms. But the combination of so many symptoms suggested to UCLA researchers that the multiple symptoms of depression may be linked to a malfunction involving brain networks -- the connections that link different brain regions.
Now, for the first time, these UCLA researchers have shown that people with depression have increased connections among most brain areas. Indeed, their brains are widely hyperconnected. The report, published this week in the online journal PLoS One, sheds new light on the brain dysfunction that causes depression and its wide array of symptoms.
"The brain must be able to regulate its connections to function properly," said the study's first author, Dr. Andrew Leuchter, a professor of psychiatry at the Semel Institute for Neuroscience and Human Behavior at UCLA. "The brain must be able to first synchronize, and then later desynchronize, different areas in order to react, regulate mood, learn and solve problems."
The depressed brain, Leuchter said, maintains its ability to form functional connections but loses the ability to turn these connections off.
"This inability to control how brain areas work together may help explain some of the symptoms in depression," he said.
In the study, the largest of its kind, the researchers studied the functional connections of the brain in 121 adults diagnosed with major depressive disorder, or MDD. They measured the synchronization of electrical signals from the brain -- brain waves -- to study networks among the different brain regions.
While some previous studies have hinted at abnormal patterns of connections in MDD, the UCLA team used a new method called "weighted network analysis" to examine overall brain connections. They found that the depressed subjects showed increased synchronization across all frequencies of electrical activity, indicating dysfunction in many different brain networks.
Brain rhythms in some of these networks regulate the release of serotonin and other brain chemicals that help control mood, said Leuchter, who is also the director of UCLA's Laboratory of Brain, Behavior, and Pharmacology and chair of the UCLA Academic Senate.
"The area of the brain that showed the greatest degree of abnormal connections was the prefrontal cortex, which is heavily involved in regulating mood and solving problems," he said. "When brain systems lose their flexibility in controlling connections, they may not be able to adapt to change.
"So an important question is, to what extent do abnormal rhythms drive the abnormal brain chemistry that we see in depression? We have known for some time that antidepressant medications alter the electrical rhythms of the brain at the same time that levels of brain chemicals like serotonin are changing. It is possible that a primary effect of antidepressant treatment is to 'repair' the brain's electrical connections and that normalizing brain connectivity is a key step in recovery from depression. That will be the next step in our research."
Other authors of the study include Dr. Ian A. Cook, Aimee M. Hunter, Chaochao Cai and Steve Horvath, all of UCLA. Funding for the study was provided by the National Institutes of Health, Lilly Research Laboratories and Pfizer Pharmaceuticals.

You are 15 years old, you?re still growing, teenagers need more calories than adults. You have to start eating healthy! It seems you have some major body issues and you really need to get help with that. Screw the detox diet?.just eat healthy foods during the day and make sure you are getting all the nutrients you need. You are too young to be starving yourself, you?re still growing!!

Much more The Relevance Of Customer Program Content
In a wonderful book called ?The Four Agreements?, Don Miguel Ruiz says the following, ?Find your voice to ask for what you want. Everybody has the right to tell you no or yes, but you always have the right to ask.? When it comes to creating healthy boundaries, no other statement rings as true. You have the right to say no to anyone or anything. You have the right to turn down a request, a favor, an extra project at work, a last-minute, rushed babysitting request from a sibling who only calls you when he/she needs something. You are not an ATM that someone can enter in a code and get back a return at will. You are a human being with rights, responsibilities and interests all your own. You have the right to make your life and your family your priority.
Even knowing this doesn?t seem to keep people in a zone to powerfully and clearly say ?No? to demanding people. Demanding people are a unique breed. On the outside, they seem confident, poised, focused and able to get anything and everything they want. But pay closer attention to the tactics used to get what they want and what you?ll find is that demanding people are some of the most insecure, low self-esteem people you will ever meet. Any time you have to pout, whine, yell or demand to get your needs met, what you?re clearly showing is this: you don?t feel worthy enough to get what you need without the seemingly added advantage of anger, control and fear.
Demanding people will sap your energy, waste your time, and cause you to feel used, abused, and unfulfilled. Say no to that type of treatment. No matter who the demanding person is (family, friend, co-worker, parent, sibling, boss, spouse), it?s time you stand up for yourself. The next time a demanding person attempts to overpower your no by convincing you to say yes, here are five phrases you need to respond with if you are to create a clear and strong boundary line with that person:
1) My answer is no and that?s final (and then walk away, hang up the phone, or change the subject).
2) I?ve made major commitments to other people so I?m not available to help you with that. What other options can you now use? With this phrase, you turn the situation back to the person who owns the issue: the demander.
3) I won?t do that and I won?t explain so don?t ask for an explanation. Again, it?s about setting a clear boundary concisely and then holding to it. Be careful not to get caught up in the defending-explaining-justifying syndrome where you spend fifteen to twenty minutes talking about why you?re saying no. That clearly tells the demanding person that you don?t trust your own judgment. Moreover, it confirms to them that you can be convinced otherwise.
4) I notice that you can get very demanding when you don?t get what you want. Unfortunately, my answer is firm so any more talk about it will be wasting both of our time. This is a harsh way to say no but harshness is sometimes necessary for someone who doesn?t take no for an answer. Say this like you mean it and that person will get the message.
5) You?re really good at expecting people to drop everything they?re doing to accommodate you and I?ve bought into that for a long time. But that time is over. My needs are as important to me as your needs are to you and since those have to come first, my answer is no. This statement really addresses past behavior and spells out clearly that while you may have been a people-pleaser before, it is something you are now choosing to no longer do. When you say this statement, you better mean it.
At the end of the day, it?s not simply what you say but HOW you say it. Demanding people use their tone of voice, body language, and their words to push their agendas on other people. If you?re going to be a person who can set a firm boundary with someone who?s demanding, you?ll need to command the strength, clarity, and definiteness of purpose that it takes to concisely, completely and firmly state the truth. It?s not about people liking you or needing you. At the end of the day, if you don?t say yes to a demander, he or she will find someone who will. Do not be deceived by excuses, pleas or threats. You have the right to say no. Exercise that right.

Most research that focuses on tobacco examines health risks associated with smoking, says Peter Benson, PhD, a sociocultural anthropologist at Washington University in St. Louis.
What has been neglected is research on tobacco production in the United States, and specifically on the people who work and live in the rural, traditional tobacco-growing areas of North Carolina.
Benson's new book, "Tobacco Capitalism" (Princeton University Press, 2011), examines the impact of the transformation of the tobacco industry on farmers, workers and the American public. It reveals public health threats, the impact of off-shoring, and the immigration issues related to tobacco production.
The book also examines the new public relations strategies of the tobacco industry and its recent corporate social responsibility "makeover".
"There are whole groups of people farmers and farm workers in our society who dedicate themselves to growing a crop that is vilified," says Benson, assistant professor of anthropology in Arts & Sciences.
"But this book is not just about good people doing a bad thing. What I found was, in going to North Carolina and going to these farms, that the story becomes much more complex."
Pressure on farmers and questions of identity
Tobacco farms often go back generations. A father's father's father farmed land still owned by his great-grandson.
Tobacco farmers take great pride in their family's history and role in tobacco production, Benson says.
But like many other American industries, tobacco companies are increasingly purchasing their products overseas, buying more tobacco leaves from farmers in places like Brazil and fewer from farmers in North Carolina, Benson says.
"Tobacco is cheaper to produce in developing countries because the labor costs are lower and there are less stringent environmental and labor laws," Benson says.
Not only is less American tobacco leaf being bought by tobacco companies, but also what is purchased from U.S. farmers is bought at increasingly lowered prices to compete with overseas farms.
As their relationship with tobacco companies deteriorates, tobacco farmers also face public derision and sometimes internal ambivalence about growing what is widely seen as a dangerous product.
Off-shoring. Lowered prices. Negative public perception. With all these issues swirling, many tobacco farmers see their livelihood and family heritage their identity as under attack from many sides.
"Tobacco growers in North Carolina are understandably distressed," Benson says. "And there's hardly any relief from a public that often sees smoking, and I think rightly so, as something that ought not exist."
Public health risks and immigration issues
The public health effects of tobacco production go beyond the risk of tobacco use itself, Benson says. It also shows in the chronic vulnerability of the migrant workers who harvest it.
Many of the workers who harvest the tobacco crop are undocumented migrant farm workers from Mexico and Central America, Benson says. They live in "labor camps" of barracks-style housing, often dilapidated or poorly constructed.
"These are dangerous places to live," Benson says. "Labor camp conditions for migrant farm workers are notoriously bad. There might be housing code violations, insect and rodent infestations, and, in the North Carolina summer, heat intense, oppressive heat.
"They are living as a vulnerable population without resources, without access to certain things like health care, legal services and employment benefits," Benson says. "And yet, they are there, going to Wal-Mart on Saturdays and Sundays, just like everybody else."
With many farmers already feeling a sense of insecurity about their livelihood and identity, a change in their small, rural communities such as an influx of immigrant workers can lead to cultural tensions.
"Hiring undocumented workers to compete economically with cheaper foreign leaf challenges the cultural status of family farms as national icons," Benson says. "It also puts tobacco farmers at the heart of contentious political debates in the U.S. about immigration."
Tobacco company marketing strategies
Since the late 1990s, tobacco companies have undergone what Benson calls a "corporate social responsibility makeover," shifting responsibility from the companies (for making a harmful product) to consumers (for supposedly choosing to use it) and claiming to create "safer" tobacco products.
"They are telling the public, 'Look, we are a responsible corporate citizen. We make a risky product, yes, but it's your choice to use it. You are a parent. Help your kids make good decisions.'
"They've rerouted responsibility for tobacco onto parents, convenience store clerks, police officers, people checking identification cards, so that tobacco and smoking seem to be a problem of bad parenting and the family, not an inherently harmful industry," Benson says.
Tobacco companies also are promoting smokeless tobacco, electronic cigarettes and cigarettes with modified tobacco content as "safer" alternatives to cigarettes.
Problem is, there's no such thing as safe tobacco use, Benson says, and people may be misled into thinking they are making a good choice by purchasing these "safer" products.
"The tobacco industry wants you to go to the convenience store, and instead of buying a pack of Nicorette gum because you want to quit cigarettes, it wants you to choose that reduced-risk tobacco product," Benson says.
"Safe tobacco. Safe cigarette. Those words just don't go together."
Benson compares tobacco companies' "safer" tobacco to pharmaceutical companies' cholesterol-reducing drugs like Lipitor.
"If cholesterol is to be managed by Lipitor, and Lipitor is to be taken for your entire life, then that distracts attention, public health resources and political will from the idea that you can prevent high cholesterol in other ways for example, by modifying the food system at much lower cost but not to the benefit of the pharmaceutical industry," Benson says.
Instead of managing the problem of disease through a narrow focus on the consumer, Benson says, Americans, as a society, should really examine the root causes of chronic disease, especially the role of powerful industries like tobacco.

The mind-body regimen helps people find strength within themselves, even as they gradually let go of a lost loved one.
Plenty of Americans use yoga for health problems, whether it's backaches, neurological symptoms or joint stiffness. But what about emotional issues? Can yoga help heal the wounds that come with grief, loss and mourning?
According to a group of holistic experts, it can. Grief counselor and yoga instructor David Mitchell told the Louisville Courier-Journal that the mind-body regimen helps people find strength within themselves, even as they gradually let go of a lost loved one.
"We hold grief physically within ourselves?and you see that reflected in tight muscles, new aches and pains, stomachaches, headaches," he told the newspaper. "You see even people's faces kind of locked up."
Mitchell is right that the regimen is perfect for this kind of self-healing. A study published in the International Journal of Yoga Therapy found that the mind-body treatment can improve positivity, vitality and mood in people who lost someone dear to them.
For these reasons, Mitchell and his colleagues teach yoga for a healthy mind during depression and grief. Their sessions are designed to help mourning practitioners cope with loss, find themselves and even learn to laugh again ? all of which are benefits that Dahn Yoga's Shim Sung classes can also provide.

Car & van leasing is a way of renting a car or van on a long term basis. People save money by leasing. Dealers make money and still own the vehicle at the end of the lease. It is an alternative that many businesses use to provide transportation for their employees.
Usually a person who leases a vehicle has a limit on the number of miles it can be driven per year. The length of the lease can be two, three or four years. It is negotiated at the time of signing the agreement. Usually the number of miles is ten thousand. Some leases include all maintenance. The person who takes out the lease pays only for gas and insurance.
The car or van goes back to the dealer at the conclusion of a lease. He or she sells it for a profit. The lessee can buy it at that time, but rarely wants to. He or she wants to drive another late model car instead.
Payments on a lease are lower than payments on a new car. The lessee does not have to be concerned about depreciation in value. He or she can drive a new model every two, three or four years depending on the terms.
The van or car is owned by the dealer at the conclusion of a rental agreement. He or she has the advantage of selling it for profit at that time. Payments are similar, but generally lower than car payments for outright ownership. The calculations are based on something called the money factor.
The actual lease is called a finance lease. The financier buys a car for the customer to lease and collects monthly payments from the lessee. The payment responsibilities are the same as for purchasing a new car & van from the dealer. The differences are lower monthly payments and ownership does not transfer to the lessee at the end of the lease.
Car leasing provides you with the opportunity to drive an exquisite vehicle every thirty six months. You can find information about the best van leasing firm in the United Kingdom, today.

Handing airport screening duties to private companies could result in another terrorist attack like Sept. 11, Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee said Tuesday afternoon.
The Federal Aviation Administration authorization bill awaiting President Barack Obama?s signature directs the Transportation Security Administration to let more airports privatize their screening areas.

?My comment: we are looking forward to returning to 9/11,? Jackson Lee (D-Texas) said at a House Homeland Security subcommittee hearing.
TSA chief John Pistole said the new bill would open the program to all 450 U.S. airports that currently use TSA screeners.
Rep. Jerry Costello (D-Ill.) rhetorically asked why Republicans would limit their privatization quest to airport screeners.
?I think if we?re going to start contracting out the security of the flying public, then why don?t we contract out the FBI or DEA or Secret Service or Capitol Hill Police?? he said in an interview.
Costello, a former police officer, said screening should remain in the hands of trained professionals, not companies looking to make a profit.
?Security is, in my judgment, a function for professional law enforcement officials and should not go to the lowest bidder and that?s what you have when you contract out,? he said. ?The safety of the traveling public should not be jeopardized in order to save money.?
Airlines were in charge of hiring screening companies prior to the creation of TSA in late 2001.
