We are hosting a very special event on the 18th: ?Girls Day Out/Women in Music?, presented by Creative Music Services. This FREE event, which is already expected to draw at least 100 people, is a forum on the State of the Music Industry in Sacramento from the perspective of female performers and females involved in the music industry. There will also be several performances by local female artists.
Creative Music Services (CMS) is a multifaceted music industry business based in Auburn that combines music craft, acting, and business networking. CMS hosted an event in March called The Sac Valley State of the Music Industry, which was very successful, and they are planning to recreate this event this fall. To promote it, they decided to have a smaller, more focused event during the summer. ?I really wanted to focus on the woman artist and professional, and create a summer platform for women to voice their comments on issues relating to themselves and their realities and support in creating a career in the entertainment industry,? said event organizer Eric Chun. His vision for Girls Day Out is ?a unique forum for artists and professionals to communicate ?life in the fast lane.?
There will be two panels at the Girls Day Out event: an artist?s panel featuring performers and songwriters, and an industry panel featuring women in media, non profits, radio, management, venues, schools, labels and more. Everyone involved (with exception of one panelist from Oakland) represents the Sacramento region?s music scene. The artist panel will be moderated by Mercedes Kovak Novac, and the panelists will be Autumn Sky, Ricky Berger, Jessie Brune, Kathie Rollins, Alina Kamilchu, Liz Liles and Theresa Keene. The industry panel will be moderated by Aurora Berget and the panelists will be Grace Bergen, Michelle Alexander, Michele Jennae, Larisa Bryski, Joceyln Jade Noir, Zarah Mastersen, Myki Angeline, Lisa Mitchell and Trisha Rhomberg.
The idea behind Girls Day Out is to provide a focus platform to create clarity and balance in what Chun called ?an extremely difficult field?. Chun stressed that this event is focused on the positive and not the negative?it is not the place for complaints about the music scene, but a place to encourage growth and support in the music community. Likewise, though the event is focused on women in music, it is open to all genders.
?Every person attending that day is trying to make a living doing this,? said Chun. ?With that in mind ?and my network, I wanted to put ?a decent, not total cross reference of experiences together in industry and artists.? According to Chun, some sample questions that may be discussed at the panel are ?What is the future of music performance in this region??, ?Is music education important for a music career?? and ?I?m super talented?is that all I need?? Instead of audience hand-raising during the panel, questions will be written down beforehand and discussed at the panel?s discretion.
There will be performances before and after the forum by Autumn Sky, Ricky Berger, Jessie Brune, Taylor Cullen, Kathie Rollins, Alina Kamilchu, and Theresa Keene.
